Saving the Giant Sea Turtles

Vida Verde Agroforestry works with the Help Them Help Themselves Foundation to improve life for the people near its projects, and for the animals too.

Spay and neuter clinics

Vida Verde has supported spay and neuter clinics in the villages to help keep the local dog and cat population healthy and manageable.

Sea turtle sanctuaries

Vida Verde and the Foundation have also created Giant Sea Turtle sanctuaries. Eggs are collected from nests that poachers would otherwise raid, cared for, and the hatchlings are released safely into the ocean.

Why it matters

According to Vida Verde and the Foundation, Giant Sea Turtle eggs left in wild nests have less than a 5% chance of producing hatchlings that survive to adulthood. When eggs are cared for and released through a sanctuary like theirs, they report survival rates of around 95%. They say thousands of turtles have been released back into the ocean so far.

These figures are the company’s own and haven’t been independently verified.

More on giving back

Turtles are one part of how the farm supports its community. Read Giving Back to El Rosario for the rest, or learn about the farm itself on the About page.
