Working at the intersection of productive agriculture and ecological resilience
Vida Verde Agroforestry works with farmers and landowners across the United States to integrate trees into working agricultural landscapes. The goal is not to transform farms into forests, but to find the right tree-based practices that make existing operations more productive, more resilient, and more ecologically sound over time.
Agroforestry is not new. Farmers have integrated trees and crops for millennia, across nearly every climate and culture. What is newer is the body of research and documented practice — in the United States and internationally — that allows practitioners to design systems with more confidence about which approaches work in which contexts, and which don't.
The majority of US cropland is managed without permanent woody perennials. That creates real vulnerabilities: topsoil exposed to wind and water erosion, limited habitat for beneficial insects, no structural buffer against weather extremes, and no long-term carbon storage from the agricultural landscape itself.
The knowledge and the practices to address this exist. What's often missing is site-specific, practical guidance that accounts for how an actual farm operation works — not just for how an ideal agroforestry system would be designed on a blank map.
That gap is where we work. We bring agroforestry knowledge directly into the context of your operation: your soils, your markets, your equipment, your labor, your goals. The systems we help design are intended to function and endure on working farms, not in demonstration plots.
Every working farm is a managed ecosystem. What we do is help that ecosystem also work as agriculture.
